personality:
It is important to note that the events of Deadpool 2 take place after the worst days of Cable's life. There are behaviours that suggest he's behaving irrationally and out of anger from losing his family. It also speaks to his fortitude and determination.

Cable just keeps going. Cable was born with a techno-organic virus, it has inflicted some level of body-horror trauma onto him and takes immense will and strength to keep at bay. Cable is also from the future and, though he's never very specific about it, it appears that he comes from a war-torn, tumultuous time. He is of the opinion that the people of the past are soft and don't know real pain or fear. He says this while kidnapping and planning to torture someone, granted he gives that up when it's no longer necessary.

It is implied that Cable is "something like" a soldier who pisses off villainous, rogue mutants in his line of work. It shows in his combat prowess but also his discipline and focus. Cable is ruthless in his pursuit of Russell, regardless of the body count he accrues. It is extremely difficult for Wade to urge Cable away from his plans (to kill a kid who will grow up to kill his family). Cable doesn't initially offer up much information about himself, except that he's named Cable, he's from the future, he's here for Russell and he hates dubstep.

Cable has an extremely serious demeanour and he speaks bluntly. He can be vague and at times, say and do peculiar things to be deliberately unsettling (for example, applying lip balm, making heavy eye contact and telling Wade he reminds him of his wife). It is at these times he tends to divulge little nuggets of information. Usually unprompted, usually at random. It could be that he doesn't really know how to talk to people, that he's naturally withdrawn and an introvert. Given his propensity for strategy, some of it seems calculated.

When Cable realises he can't do something alone (kill the Juggernaut) he compromises and creates alliances. Cable is practical and logical and not too proud to make a smart choice. He also makes evaluations of people that he allows to change based on what he sees. He doesn't initially care for Wade, but comes to respect him deeply for his hope and his heart.

Cable is deeply compassionate, even if he's not the best at showing it. He feels tremendously guilty for shooting and killing Wade, who takes a bullet for Russell in a power-dampening collar. Cable has one shot to get home and see his family, but he gives it up to "stick around and make sure the world doesn't shit itself into oblivion". He also does so for Wade, despite his denial, and it's because he seems to assess that the world would be better if more people cared the way Wade does.

Although being cold and callous is something Cable puts forward to the world, he obviously loves his family above everything. He feels guilt for being the reason they were in the line of fire and would do anything to make it right. Once he can confirm his family is safe, his demeanour appears to shift considerably. He's still taciturn, but he seems more even-tempered and more exasperated than irritated (he threatens Wade if he repeats an annoying joke, but he just gives up when Wade ignores the threat).
